“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Through the simple example of choosing a place at the table, Jesus invites us to examine the place we seek in the eyes of others. Do we serve out of love, or do we secretly expect recognition and appreciation? Sometimes, even our good works become a way of proving our importance. Because pride gradually makes us the centre of our own world. We begin to measure our worth by our position, responsibilities, influence, or the appreciation we receive. When others are honoured, we may feel overlooked; and when someone else succeeds, we may struggle to rejoice. These reactions reveal how deeply our identity may be attached to recognition rather than to God's love. True humility is not denying our worth, but knowing that our worth comes from God, not from our position or the praise of others.
Jesus invites us to choose the lower place—not to appear humble and gain honour later, but to serve sincerely without seeking superiority. It means accepting correction, rejoicing in others' success, and continuing to do good even when nobody notices. Jesus Himself, though Lord and Master, came among us as one who serves. His greatness was revealed through self-giving love, not the pursuit of honour. God's way of exalting us is different from the world's way. True exaltation begins when we no longer need to exalt ourselves. When we surrender our need for recognition, we become free to love and serve wherever we are needed.
Today's Gospel challenges us to ask: Can we remain faithful without appreciation? Can we rejoice when others receive the honour we desire? Are we willing to serve without insisting on the place we think we deserve? Humility is not about making ourselves small; it is about making room for God and others. True greatness is found not in the highest place we occupy, but in the love with which we serve. Amen
