AATHAVAN
MEDITATION
No.: 2071 — Date: 10.10.2026
"You have chastised me, and I was chastised, like an untrained
calf; bring me back that I may restore, for You are the Lord my God." — Jeremiah 31:18 (NASB)
Ephraim
was one of the tribes loved by God. God Himself bore witness saying,
"Ephraim is My dear son." Yet, they failed to return love for God's
love. Therefore, God disciplined them.
Having
been disciplined by God, they later recognized their mistake. Realizing that
the cause of their afflictions was indeed God's chastisement, they recalled it
and declared: "You have chastised me, and I was chastised, like an
untrained calf."
When
I was a young boy, bullock carts were in wide use. I used to observe back then
that a bull pulling the cart would sometimes lie down on the road, refusing to
pull. The cart driver would try various methods to make the bull stand up. Even
when he twisted its tail, pinched its ears, and beat it with a whip causing
pain, some bulls still would not rise. Finally, he would heat an iron rod and
brand the bull. Only then would it get up.
Ephraim
recalls his own condition in a similar way, saying, "I was chastised
like an untrained calf." Furthermore, the words that follow serve as
advice for us and as a prayer we ought to pray to God. Indeed, it says: "Bring
me back that I may restore, for You are the Lord my God."
That
is to say, God may have allowed certain painful circumstances in our lives as
discipline for our mistakes and sinful deeds. Because of this, we might have
been struck by God much like a cart driver striking an untrained bull. However,
we cannot break free from our sinful habits through our own self-effort. We
need God's help. Therefore, let us pray to God, saying: "Bring me back
that I may restore, for You are the Lord my God." He alone must turn
us back from our wrong paths.
God
conveys this same message through Isaiah as well:
"Where
will you be stricken again, as you continue in your rebellion? The whole head
is sick and the whole heart is faint." — Isaiah 1:5 (NASB)
Let
us no longer remain in a state of being struck like an untrained bull. Let us
confess our sins to God and plead: "Turn me back, O Lord, and I will be
turned; for You are the Lord my God." Then we will surely be restored,
and a resolution will come to the distress and troubles in our lives.
