"For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a
man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at
himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he
was."— James 1:23–24
The
Bible is like a mirror. Just as a mirror reveals the flaws and dirt on our
face, every single word of God exposes the imperfections and uncleanness of our
soul.
When
we read the Bible attentively, our shortcomings become clear to us. If someone
hears the word but does not do what it says, he is like a person who merely
glances at his face in a mirror. As soon as he walks away from the mirror, he
forgets all about it.
Women
are well known for looking at themselves in the mirror to refine and beautify
their appearance. Before going to a wedding or any other special function, they
spend hours standing before a mirror to adorn themselves. Yes, dear friends, a
mirror clearly shows us what is present on our face.
The
Apostle James tells us that we should not be like the person who merely looks
in the mirror and walks away; instead, we must be like a woman who examines
herself carefully to correct and adorn her appearance. Continuing from today's
meditation verse, he states:
"But
one who has looked carefully at the perfect law, the law of freedom, and has
continued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an active doer, this
person will be blessed in what he does." — James 1:25 (NASB)
When
reading the Bible, we must not be like the man who looks in the mirror and
moves on; we ought to look intently into the perfect law spoken of in Scripture
and remain in it. Furthermore, when we look into it carefully, we should not
forget what we have seen, but put it into practice. The one who does so will be
blessed in his actions.
Let
us examine how we read the Bible. Do we read it merely out of obligation? Or do
we read it out of routine habit simply because our parents taught us to do so
in our childhood? Or are we like people who practice fortune-telling—opening
the Bible at random and taking the first verse that catches our eye as God's
word for us?
If
this is how we read the Bible, we are like ordinary man looking at his natural
face in a mirror. Just as he forgets what he looks like as soon as he steps
away, we too will forget what we have read. If so, the Bible becomes nothing
more than an ordinary storybook to us.
If
we look intently into the Bible as we read and abide in it, we will not be
forgetful hearers, but doers of the word. Moreover, we will then be blessed in
all that we do.
