AATHAVAN MEDITATION
No: 2078 — Date: 17.10.2026
"Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge;
you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering." (Luke 11:52, NASB)
In
ancient times, Bible scholars were the scribes (lawyers). Although today’s
meditation verse seems to be addressed to them, it equally applies to the
pastors who teach the Bible relying merely on human intellect.
Human
intellect stands as a major obstacle to truly knowing God. Through human
intellect, we can comprehend history, geography, science, chemistry, and
mathematics. However, God cannot be known through mere intellectual
understanding. Today, many read the Bible just like any other book and
interpret God’s Word based solely on the understanding of their human minds.
Many
believe that reading the Bible is the way to know God. However, if we know God
first and then read the Bible, new light and clarity will shine upon the words
spoken within it. Yes, beloved, throughout the Scriptures, we can see the
recurring phrase: "the knowledge of God."
One
who does not know God cannot understand the spiritual truths taught in the
Bible. And one who lacks this understanding cannot teach the Bible accurately
to others. For:
"For
those who are in accord with the flesh set their minds on the things of the
flesh, but those who are in accord with the Spirit, the things of the
Spirit." (Romans 8:5,
NASB)
Only
someone who has entered into a spiritual life experience can possess spiritual
thoughts. Furthermore:
"However,
you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells
in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to
Him." (Romans 8:9, NASB)
Yes,
beloved, knowing God does not require human intellect; rather, it requires a
heart like a child. The Lord Jesus spoke of this when He said:
"I
praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things
from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father,
for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight." (Luke 10:21, NASB)
Unfortunately,
today, those who have merely studied and comprehended the Bible through human
intellect hold positions as pastors and priests. In many churches, the
believers sitting in the congregation know God far better than those preaching
from the pulpit. Yet, these leaders confuse believers and lead them astray with
their intellectual teachings. Indeed, they have taken away the key of
knowledge; they themselves do not enter, and they hinder those who are
entering. To such people, Jesus Christ says: "Woe to you."
Charles
Spurgeon, known as the Prince of Preachers, said that when a person knows the
Bible only through human intellect without knowing God and tries to teach
believers about Him, it is like a duck trying to teach young eagles how to fly.
Beloved,
perhaps due to compelling circumstances or a lack of other choices, we may find
ourselves stuck under pastors who teach the Bible solely through human
intellect—much like those ducks. But do not be dismayed; let us strengthen our
personal fellowship with God. When we do, the Holy Spirit Himself will teach us
all things and lead us in the way of truth.
