"Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a
curse for us—for it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.'" — Galatians 3:13
The
Jews lived with a strong attachment solely to the Law given by Moses. Those
commandments were the only things that seemed supreme to them, but they failed
to understand the inner humanity and love conveyed through them. In other
words, they viewed the commandments merely as strict rules and failed to
practice basic humanity.
However,
Abraham lived before the commandments of Moses were given. He did not live a
righteous life by obeying a set of laws; rather, he lived righteously based on
his faith in God. We too are called to live such a life of faith.
Yes,
dear ones, the legal system given through Moses became incapable of saving us,
because no one can be justified before God simply by keeping rules. Regarding
this, we read:
"Now,
that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, 'The righteous
one will live by faith.'"
— Galatians 3:11
If
we merely observe rules while turning away from faith in Christ and distancing
ourselves from His words of love, we remain under a curse:
"For
all who are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written:
'Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the
Law, to perform them.'"
— Galatians 3:10
According
to the Old Testament, anyone hanged on a tree is considered cursed (Deuteronomy
21:23). Pointing this out, the Apostle Paul explains that because Jesus Christ
bore the sin and curse of humanity and hung on the cross, He became a curse on
our behalf. By hanging on the cross for us and becoming a curse, He redeemed us
and set us free from the curse of the Law.
Paul
explains that this happened so that the blessing given to Abraham through faith
might also come to us, the Gentiles. Just as Abraham received a blessing
because he believed God, we too must receive blessing by believing in Christ.
Indeed, as we read:
"In
order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles,
so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith." — Galatians 3:14
This
is an example of the supreme love of Christ. Therefore, let us not continue
focusing on unnecessary rituals, traditions, and rule-keeping at the expense of
our faith in Christ. Let us place our complete faith not in commandments, but
in Christ. He Himself will guide us in the paths of righteousness and make us
worthy to receive the promises of blessing given to Abraham.
