Sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:12–14) /

Living for the Praise of His Glory

                                       -  Sr.  Amutha,  ICM

In today's reading, St Paul reminds us of three profound truths: we exist for the praise of God's glory, we are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, and the Spirit is the first instalment of our inheritance. These truths reveal who we are, how we are called to live, and where our journey is leading us

1. We exist for the praise of His glory. What does it mean to live for the praise of God's glory? It means allowing our lives to reveal God's goodness. Our words, attitudes, relationships, and actions should make His love visible to others. We may speak about God and perform many good works, but the deeper question is: Can others experience God's love through the way we treat them? The greatest praise we offer God is not only through our words, but through the lives we live.

2. We are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. Through Baptism, we belong to Christ, and the Holy Spirit dwells within us. We are precious because we belong to God. This gift also calls us to live according to the Spirit. Are our words guided by truth, our decisions shaped by love, and our relationships marked by peace? Being sealed with the Spirit means allowing Him to transform our lives from within.

3. The Holy Spirit is the first instalment of our inheritance. An instalment is the first part of something greater that is yet to come. The Holy Spirit is God's gift to us now, assuring us of the fullness of life promised in Christ. We have not yet experienced the fullness of God's Kingdom, but His presence is already at work within us, leading us towards eternal life.

4. To the praise of His glory. St Paul begins and ends this passage with the same words, reminding us of the purpose of our Christian life. This repetition reminds us that our entire Christian life should reveal God's goodness. Even in our service to God, we may seek recognition and appreciation. So we must ask ourselves: Am I living to make God known, or to make myself known? When we serve faithfully, forgive sincerely, and care for others without expecting anything in return, God's glory shines through us.

We belong to God, we are sealed with His Spirit, and we are journeying towards the fullness of His promise. Let us allow the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts, words, actions, and relationships. May our lives become a living testimony to God's goodness, so that everything we do may be to the praise of His glory.

Loving Father, help us to live as people who belong to You, guided by Your Holy Spirit. May our words, actions, and relationships reveal Your goodness, so that everything we do may be to the praise of Your glory. Amen.
