"Therefore, I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong." — 2 Corinthians 12:10
In this world, when we possess physical strength, financial strength, or authority and power, we tend to rely heavily on them and act according to them. Moreover, when we believe that we can accomplish everything through our own strength, we fail to perceive God's strength. A person who trusts in self-reliance neither senses God's power nor accepts it.
A powerful person cannot sense God's help in critical times in the way a weak person does, because, in the eyes of self-reliance, God's power appears insignificant. However, if all such human strength leaves us, living with that loss becomes difficult.
Gideon was threshing wheat near his winepress in fear of the Midianites. The Lord told him to go and fight against Midian.
"He said to Him, 'O Lord, how shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.'" — Judges 6:15 (NASB)
That is, Gideon was fully aware of his own weakness and the weakness of Israel. He recognized that he was weak and confessed it before the Lord.
"The Lord looked at him and said, 'Go in this your might and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?'" — Judges 6:14 (NASB)
Furthermore,
"But the Lord said to him, 'Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.'" — Judges 6:16 (NASB)
And in that manner, he overcame Midian.
Yes, dear friends! Fighting and winning a battle as a mighty man of strength is human ability. But when we have no strength of our own, yet completely depend on the Lord and gain the victory, it is then that we truly experience God's power.
The weaknesses, reproaches, pressures, afflictions, distresses, and dishonours we encounter in life make us aware of our own lack of strength. The Apostle Paul experienced these abundantly in his life, which is why he says that he takes pleasure in them. Apostle Paul was a frail man, yet, filled with the confidence of knowing Christ lived within him, he declared:
"I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." — Philippians 4:13 (NASB)
If our attempts to overcome sinful habits or our efforts to achieve success in life have been based on our own self-reliance, we will never be able to break free or succeed. We must abandon self-reliance and trust in God. We ought to wholeheartedly confess to Him, "Lord, without You, I am nothing." Like Paul, we must learn not to murmur or complain in the midst of weaknesses, reproaches, distresses, tribulations, and hardships. Then, even though we are weak, we will be transformed into those who are strong.
