“I have called you by your name, giving you a title, though you knew me not.”
God speaks these words to Cyrus, a pagan king whom He chose to accomplish His purpose. Cyrus did not know God, yet God called him by name and gave him a mission. This reveals a profound truth: God can choose us even before we know Him, and He can work through us even when we do not fully understand His plans.
What title has God given each of us? We may have titles given by society, such as teacher, doctor, superior, missionary, or religious sister. We may also have titles given by our responsibilities. But these are not the deepest titles.
God gives us titles, His beloved children, His chosen ones, His servants, His witnesses, and His instruments of love and peace. These titles are not merely names; they are invitations to live according to His purpose. Perhaps God has given us a title that we have not yet recognised. He may be calling us to be a reconciler in a divided community, a source of encouragement to someone who has lost hope, a voice for the voiceless, or a compassionate presence to those who are suffering. We may be searching for a greater position while God is inviting us to fulfil a deeper mission through the ordinary duties of daily life.
Therefore, the important question is not, “What title do I hold?” but “Am I living the title God has given me?” If God calls us His beloved children, do we treat others as His beloved children? If He calls us His instruments of peace, do our words and actions bring healing or deepen division?
Loving God, help us to recognise the title You have given us and the mission entrusted to us. Teach us to live as Your beloved children, and faithful witnesses. May our lives bring healing where there is division, hope where there is despair, and love where there is indifference. May we not seek greatness in the eyes of the world, but faithfulness in Your eyes. Amen.
