“Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:20, NASB)
An ambassador is a representative. An ambassador is someone who is entrusted with a mission by the person who sends him and is responsible for carrying out that mission. In the same way, Paul says, “We are ambassadors for Christ … we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” In other words, Christ commissioned His messengers to proclaim the forgiveness of sins, and that is the very message they were called to preach.
Paul further explains that God makes His appeal through His servants. As those sent by Christ, they proclaim the message, “Be reconciled to God.” If we are to enter into fellowship with God, our sins must first be forgiven. That is why we read in the Bible that Jesus Christ, on several occasions, forgave people’s sins before healing them of their illnesses.
Jesus Christ also entrusted this message to His disciples as a command. Therefore, the apostle Paul declares, “namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their wrongdoings against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:19, NASB).
When God first encountered the apostle Paul, He commissioned him to proclaim the forgiveness of sins to the people. The Lord said:
“to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, and receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.” (Acts 26:18, NASB)
In obedience to God's command, the apostle Paul continued to proclaim this as his central message. He says:
“Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:20, NASB)
Sadly, the message of reconciliation is being concealed today, while the teachings of prosperity and worldly blessings are gaining prominence. Many ministers are leading people to walk in darkness, failing even to understand this fundamental truth: Jesus Christ did not come into this world to suffer and die merely to provide people with worldly prosperity and material blessings.
Today, we see that many who worship other gods live in greater material prosperity than those who know Christ, worship Him, and profess to be true Christians. This itself demonstrates that Christ did not come into this world for the purpose of making people prosperous in worldly terms.
The message of reconciliation is the true message of Christianity. Our responsibility is to go to Christ, the sacrificial Lamb who was rejected, who bore our sins and suffered for us, and who was put to death outside the city gate. As the Scripture says:
“So, let’s go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach.” (Hebrews 13:13, NASB)
Let us live with gratitude to Christ, who reconciled us to God through Himself and entrusted us with the message of reconciliation. Let us receive forgiveness for our sins and live lives that glorify Him.
Our sins stand as a dividing wall between God and us. This wall must be broken down. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and earnestly pray that they may be washed away by His blood. For He alone is able to redeem us and grant us salvation.
