“That your love may increase ever more in knowledge and every kind of perception.”
St. Paul prays for three graces: growing love, true knowledge, and spiritual discernment.
Love must keep growing. Jesus commands us to love one another as He has loved us (John 13:34). His love reaches beyond friends and those who love us in return, even embracing our enemies (Matthew 5:44). Therefore, we must ask not simply whether we love, but whether our love is becoming more like the self-giving love of Christ.
Love must grow in knowledge. Biblical knowledge is more than knowing about God; it is coming to know Him through a living relationship. As we grow in knowing Christ, we learn to see others with His compassion rather than judge them by their weaknesses. As Paul reminds us, “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” (1 Corinthians 8:1). True knowledge must lead us towards greater love.
Love must be guided by discernment. Paul prays that the Philippians may recognise what truly matters (Philippians 1:10). Discernment helps us distinguish between what pleases us and what pleases God. Even when speaking the truth, we are called to speak it in love (Ephesians 4:15). Our words and actions should build up others, not wound them.
These three graces belong together. Love gives warmth to knowledge; knowledge deepens our understanding; and discernment guides our love towards the good. The deeper we know Christ, the more we learn to love as He loves. The more we love, the more we desire to understand others. And the more we grow in discernment, the better we become at expressing that love in ways that bring life, healing, and unity.
Paul's prayer is ultimately a prayer for transformation. He wants our hearts to grow, our understanding to deepen, and our choices to reflect Christ. Christian maturity is seen in how our love changes the way we understand people, make decisions, and live together. Amen.
