May the Eyes of Our Hearts Be Enlightened (Ephesians 1:17–18)

                                            - Sr. Amutha, ICM

In today’s passage, St. Paul prays that God may give us a spirit of wisdom and revelation so that we may truly know Him.. True wisdom is not merely knowing more about God, but allowing Him to transform the way we see and live our lives. That is why Paul prays that the eyes of our hearts may be enlightened. Our physical eyes see what happens around us, but the eyes of our hearts help us recognize God’s presence and purpose in our experiences. An enlightened heart does not mean that our problems disappear; it means that we learn to see them in the light of God’s faithfulness.

Paul invites us to discover the hope of God’s call and the riches of His glorious inheritance. Our true wealth is not measured by our possessions, achievements, or positions, but by belonging to God and living according to His purpose. Even when the future is uncertain, His call gives us hope and direction.

Therefore, let us ask ourselves: Are we seeking only God’s help to change our circumstances, or are we also allowing Him to change the way we see them? Perhaps God is inviting us to recognise His presence in our difficulties, listen to His voice through others, or let go of our fears and expectations.

When the eyes of our hearts are enlightened, we begin to see with faith, live with hope, and respond with love. We may not understand everything that happens in our lives, but we can trust the God who has called us.

Father of glory, enlighten the eyes of our hearts. Help us to know You more deeply, recognise the hope of Your call, and live faithfully according to Your purpose. May our lives reflect Your glory. Amen.
