In today's Gospel, Jesus says that this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets, from Abel to Zechariah. What does He mean by these words? Why does He mention Abel and Zechariah, and what message does this have for us today?
From Abel to Zechariah, we see the tragic consequences of jealousy, injustice, resistance to truth, and the refusal to change. Jesus reminds us that we cannot escape responsibility by condemning the sins of previous generations while repeating their attitudes in our own lives.
The blood of Abel continues to cry out and calls us through those suffer injustice, abuse, exploitation, protect life and care for one another. The blood of Zechariah challenges those who honour the prophets of the past by building memorials while rejecting God's message in the present. This can happend to us, too. We may honour the saints and celebrates their feasts yet become defensive when someone points out our mistakes. Both remind us that God sees the suffering of the innocent and calls His people to live with justice, and compassion.
Let us not be people who honour God's messengers but reject their message. Instead, let us become people who listen to God's voice, recognise the suffering of others, stand for justice, accept correction with humility, and keep the truth of the Gospel into practice. Every day, we have a choice: to silence the truth or listen to it; to ignore suffering or respond with compassion.
Lord Jesus, open our hearts to Your truth. Give us the humility to listen, the courage to speak the truth with love, and the compassion to stand with those who suffer. May our lives reflect your love, justice, and mercy. and compassion. Amen.
