"AATHAVAN"
Meditation – 1973
July 03, Friday 2026
"Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress; My eye is wasted away from grief, my soul and my body also." — Psalm 31:9
Today’s meditation verse is David’s plea to God during a time of his most severe and agonizing distress. Such crises happen to everyone in the world at some point or another. When we read the daily newspapers today, we can see many suicides occurring precisely due to this kind of despondency. In these kinds of crises, a person's mind and body are deeply affected. This is exactly what David means when he says, "My eye is wasted away from grief, my soul and my body also."
For example, when everyone who studied with us is well-settled in life with a good job, but we alone are left behind without employment, we feel ashamed even to walk around our own village, don't we? Won't everyone in village look down upon us? This is exactly what David describes:
"Because of all my adversaries, I have become a reproach, especially to my neighbours, And an object of dread to my acquaintances; Those who see me in the street flee from me. I am forgotten as a dead man, out of mind; I am like a broken vessel." — Psalm 31:11-12
During times like these, we cannot approach the people of this world for comfort. We cannot reveal our deepest inner agonies to anyone; even if we do reveal them, no one can fully comprehend our anxieties. But God can understand them, and He can change them. Therefore, during such times, it is essential that we cling to God alone. Yes, let us declare just as David does:
"But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord; I say, 'You are my God.'" — Psalm 31:14
When we share our anxieties with human beings, even if they listen with compassion and offer words of comfort, they sometimes reveal what we told them to others. This only amplifies the agony we already have. Therefore, dearly beloved, when you are weary in such afflictions, it is best to share your anxieties and pain with God alone, and to wait quietly for Him to act.
Let us lay bare our genuine agonies before God exactly as they are, just as David does when he says, "Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress; My eye is wasted away from grief, my soul and my body also." Unlike humans, He will not look down upon us, despise us, or gossip about our sufferings to others. Yes, as it is written:
"For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard." — Psalm 22:24
According to this word, He will hear our cry and grant us the perfect answer.
