"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" — Luke 11:13 (NASB)
Even Satan can use Scripture to confuse people by presenting biblical proofs. This is exactly how he tempted the Lord Jesus Christ through the words of Scripture. However, Jesus Christ retaliated and answered him using those very same Scriptures.
Satan's tactic is to rely on a specific scriptural passage without observing the context in which it was spoken, or to read and interpret only the parts favourable to us without looking at the complete truth of the verse. A passage that has been similarly misunderstood by most ministers and people is the following statement spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ:
"So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened." — Luke 11:9-10 (NASB)
This verse is understood by many to mean that God will grant whatever worldly blessing we ask for. But we will only understand what truth this verse is actually trying to convey, and why it was spoken, if we read further. Jesus concludes this teaching by saying: "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"
In other words, He is telling us to ask the Heavenly Father for the Holy Spirit, to seek the Holy Spirit in our lives, and to keep knocking because we need Him. That is why it is written: "how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"
What a massive deception it is to twist the truth spoken by Jesus Christ—that we should live with a deep desire to receive the Holy Spirit in our lives—by taking only the part we want for ourselves and abandoning the vital concluding portion!
The verses of the Bible show us the path to a holy life in this world and help us attain eternal life; they are not entirely about worldly blessings. Did Jesus Christ not say:
"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." — Matthew 6:33 (NASB)
Would the One who said this turn around and tell us to ask, seek, and knock for worldly blessings? Shouldn't we recognize the truth that Jesus Christ is not someone who changes His words from one moment to the next?
"You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." — James 4:3-4 (NASB)
Beloved, it is essential that we consume the Bible as the Word of God meant for our spiritual growth. Let us not fall prey to Satan's tactics by chopping, cropping, and interpreting the verses to suit ourselves. Instead, let us understand them according to the truth in which they were spoken, and live them out.
