"Thus,
saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone
far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?" (Jeremiah
2: 5)
Although we have done a lot of favors and help to some people in this world, they often do not think of the help we have done when they reach a higher level in life than they were before. Not only that, they will also cut off our communication. "We have helped this man so much, why does he ignore us?" we think like this.
The psychological reason for
this is that; they were aware of their old inferiority. So, when they look at
us after reaching a good position today, their mind will tell them “You are in
this good position today because of this person". They don't like it. They
consider they have raised in life because of their hard work.
Humans are in the same state
of mind with God. In today's meditation verse, God says this as a repentant man
says, “What
iniquity have they found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked
after vanity, and are become vain?"
God performed many miracles
for the people of Israel and rescued them from slavery in Egypt and brought
them into Canaan, the nation of milk and honey. "Neither said they, where
is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through
the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of
drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through,
and where no man dwelt?" (Jeremiah 2: 6)
What injustice have they
found in me, that I have brought your fathers out of Egypt by doing so many
favors, that they have turned away from me, and followed vanity, and become vain?
Says the holy Lord.
Beloved, this is a question
God asks of each of us, not just the Israelites who were rescued from Egypt.
Let's think about our life. Let us think of what good things God has done for
us, what good things He has done for our children, and how many great diseases
He has protected us from and give thanks to Him.
Not only that, but let's
think if we are grateful to God who has done so many good things. Are we trying
to know Him in our lives and not just going to the temple for rituals? Let us
consider whether we know God and live a life according to Him.
No matter how many benefits
God has done in our lives, if we forget it and engage in things that are
against God for small gains and wander for money, property, and position, He
will ask us like today's verse, "Son, daughter, what injustice do you see
in me that you are far away from me, following vanity, and become vain?"
Let us thank God for all the
good things He has done in our lives and commit ourselves to Him to live a life
that suits Him. He who asks us this as a loving father and mother today will
not be beloved when he comes as a powerful judge. Then we can expect from him
not this love, but justice. So, let's be cautious and decide to live a life
that suits him.
