Scripture Meditation - No: 1,391
"For all that is in the
world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not
of the Father but is of the world." (1 John 2:16)
In today's meditation verse,
the apostle John identifies certain things in this world that lead us into sin.
He categorizes them as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the
pride of life. These are the very things that draw us directly into sin. Lust
refers to excessive desire for something.
The lust of the flesh and the
lust of the eyes were the reasons behind Adam and Eve's sin. As we read in
Genesis 3:6: "So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food,
that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she
took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he
ate." Their eyes and their bodily desires led them to fall into sin.
Even today, many sinful acts
committed by humans are driven by these bodily desires and the eyes. Next, the
meditation verse points out the sin of "the pride of life"—
pride in one's life. After experiencing what the eyes see and the body desires,
humans seek to accumulate more, which gives them authority and a sense of
arrogance. This leads to belittling others and viewing them as inferior.
This is why the apostle John
emphasizes that these things are not from the Father but from the world. Since
they originate from the world, they are not eternal. The world itself is not
eternal, so how can things born of the temporal world be everlasting? Hence, he
continues in verse 17: "The world and its desires pass away, but
whoever does the will of God lives forever."
If we live as slaves to these
desires, we risk losing our connection with God, just as Adam and Eve lost
their divine fellowship due to their subjugation to the lust of the flesh and
the eyes. Romans 8:7 says: "Because the mind governed by the flesh is
hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so."
We are called to abandon the
mindset of the flesh and live according to the Spirit's perspective. When we
live this way, forsaking the desires of the flesh and the eyes, we attain true
peace and eternal life. As Romans 8:6 declares: "For to be carnally
minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."
