In today's Gospel, Jesus pronounces three woes against the Pharisees and one against the scholars of the law. These are serious warnings against a religion that looks good outwardly but lacks love, justice, humility, and compassion. Are we also Pharisees in our daily Christian life? We may share their attitudes without realizing it.
First, we practice religion but neglect love and justice. We may pray faithfully yet lack patience, kindness, and understanding towards others. Second, we seek to honour and recognition. We may serve others but feel hurt when our efforts go unnoticed or others receive appreciation. Third, we become like unseen graves when our words and attitudes secretly wound others. Our criticism, gossip, jealousy, and negativity can discourage people while we continue to appear religious. Fourth, we impose burdens on others without helping them carry those burdens. We may demand perfection, point out mistakes, and expect others to change without understanding their struggles or examining ourselves.
A Call to Conversion
Dear friends, it is easy to recognise the faults of others but difficult to acknowledge our own. We may condemn pride while remaining proud, criticise others' lack of love while being insensitive to their struggles, and demand change without changing ourselves.
Jesus invites us to move beyond outward religious practices towards a faith that transforms our hearts and relationships.
Let us ask ourselves: Do our prayers make us more loving? Do we serve for God's glory or our own recognition? Does our presence bring life or pain to others? Do we help carry their burdens or add to them? Conversion begins when we stop concentrating on others' faults and allow God to transform us. God is not looking merely for people who appear religious, but for hearts that reflect His love through their daily lives.
Lord Jesus, help us recognise the Pharisee within ourselves. Forgive us for neglecting love, seeking recognition, hurting others, and adding to their burdens. Give us humble hearts willing to change. May our prayers lead us to love, our words bring encouragement, and our actions offer compassion. Amen.

"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: 'May they prosper who love you.
May peace be within your walls, and prosperity within your palaces.'" — Psalm 122:6–7 (NASB)
Today’s
meditation verse is one that we need to view with a spiritual meaning. What is
referred to as "Jerusalem" here does not denote the earthly city of
Jerusalem, but rather the Church of Christ in this world. "The
Church" does not refer to any specific denomination, but to the assembly
of believers.
That
is, scripture instructs us to pray for the peace of the people who have
believed in and accepted Christ. Every Christian who strives to live a
spiritual life in this world must endure tribulation. Therefore, we ought to
pray that they overcome these tribulations and live. When we pray for the peace
of the Church—which is Jerusalem—it means that we love the Church. The former
part of today's meditation verse states, "May they prosper who love
you."
Continuing,
to those who pray for the peace of Jerusalem, it is said: "May peace be
within your walls, and prosperity within your palaces." The
"wall" (rampart/fortress) refers to the fortified wall built around
the palace where kings reside. Yes, when we pray for the Church—Jerusalem—our
wall of protection is strengthened, and peace comes upon us. We who are
redeemed stand as kings before Christ.
Indeed,
having believed in and accepted Christ, He has made us kings and priests. We
read:
"But
you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s
own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called
you out of darkness into His marvellous light."— 1 Peter 2:9 (NASB)
In
summary, as those chosen and owned by Christ, we must pray not only for
ourselves but also for the peace of the Church; it is our duty. When we pray in
this manner, we will experience protection and well-being in our personal
spiritual life as well as in our family life.
In
our daily prayers, let us not forget to pray for the Church and its peace,
rather than praying solely for ourselves.

"For My people have committed two evils: They have abandoned Me, the fountain of living waters, to carve out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water." — Jeremiah 2:13 (NASB)
Today’s meditation verse was not spoken to other nations, but rather, these are the words of God spoken to His chosen people, Israel. The people of Israel were chosen by God, which is why God calls them "My people."
The first mistake these chosen people of Israel made was abandoning the Lord. That is, they left His commandments and their love for Him. Secondly, they created other gods for themselves. It is regarding this that God says with sorrow: "They have abandoned Me, the fountain of living waters, to carve out for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water."
Two verses prior to today’s meditation passage, we read:
"Has a nation changed gods when they were not gods? But My people have exchanged their glory for that which does not profit." — Jeremiah 2:11 (NASB)
Yes, they exchanged the glory of the Lord for worthless gods.
Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself is the fountain who gives us true living water. Did He not say this Himself?
"The one who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'" — John 7:38 (NASB)
Yes, beloved, today we are spiritual Israel. Even today, many who call themselves Christians are committing the very same mistake that ancient Israel committed. Today, we may not worship other physical deities, but if we give the priority that belongs to God to money, possessions, status, authority, or pride, it means that we too are worshipping foreign gods and building broken cisterns. Indeed, many Christians build broken cisterns without giving Christ the honour due to Him.
Just as water stored in a broken cistern cannot be used, such gods are of no benefit whatsoever. Beloved, it is not right for us to be like the Israelites who worshipped worthless gods. Chasing after worldly needs and pride as if they were gods, and abandoning Christ and the principles He showed, is like the foolishness of building broken cisterns.
The reason why the Israelites were led into captivity multiple times was because they left God and built such broken cisterns. Today, abandoning God for fleeting pleasures will only lead our lives into various forms of bondage.
Let us protect ourselves so that we do not make the same mistake earthly Israel made. Let us not abandon Christ, the fountain of living water; let us not build for ourselves broken cisterns that hold no water.

"If you have run with footmen and they have tired you out, then how can you compete with horses? If you fall down in a land of peace, how will you do in the thicket of the Jordan?" — Jeremiah 12:5 (NASB)
In this world, many people live relying solely on their physical strength, financial resources, and personal authority. For the most part, many lead a life that completely forgets God. Today’s meditation verse comes as a call to change this mistaken mindset, to make human beings realize their inherent weakness, and to urge them to lean entirely upon God.
In biblical times, foot soldiers (infantry) and cavalry (horsemen) played key roles in warfare. Infantry soldiers needed to possess immense physical endurance and running capability—they essentially had to run like horses to pursue enemies or escape danger.
Today's verse uses this context as a vivid metaphor. It poses a piercing question: If you, proud in heart and boasting of your running ability, grow weary while running merely against fellow foot soldiers, how will you ever compete with horses? Do you truly possess the strength to run alongside a cavalry?
Furthermore, it asks: If you wander around restless even when the world around you is at peace, what will you do when severe adversity strikes both your nation and your life—just as when the Jordan River overflows its banks and brings distress upon the people?
Yes, dear friends! This Scripture stands as a solemn warning to those who think, "I have great strength, ample money, and position." Our self-reliance and personal strength cannot rescue us in times of crisis. It reminds us that only when we depend on God can we run with horses and endure the great floods of the Jordan.
Therefore, beloved, let us not place our confidence in human strength. Instead, let us acknowledge our weakness before God and plead for His grace. It is not our power, but God’s grace alone that enables us to overcome trials, sins, and suffering to live a victorious life.
"My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." — 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NASB)
Only when we humbly acknowledge our weaknesses before God can we truly experience His grace operating in our lives.
