"Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3: 12)
Spiritual life experiences are like a vast ocean. It cannot be fully known by humans. But we who are called by Christ to the spiritual life must have a desire to know it. No one is completely adept at spiritual experiences.
Therefore, he says, I do not think that I have attained, or become fully chosen, but that I continue to desire to lay hold of that for which I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. "Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you." (Philippians 3: 15)
Beloved, many professing Christians today generally do not have this idea and sense of spiritual life. Instead, petty bigotry abounds. (Including the Pentecostal churches) Apostle Paul, even though he was the greatest apostle and was used by God in the most powerful way, says he himself has not yet achieved it. If it is so, what is our position?
Christ Jesus is our stake; he is our goal. Achieving that goal is a feeling that every human being should have. The apostle Paul says he is traveling toward that goal. "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3: 14) he says.
God can reveal spiritual secrets to us based on our level of interest. If we give a particular thing to a person who is not interested in that thing and does not know its use, he will not think much of it because he does not know its value. He had no pleasure that he had got that item. Similarly, God does not reveal great things to those who are not interested.
On the contrary, if we like a certain thing, we will have the desire to get it somehow. We will make efforts for that. God will guide such people by giving them more experiences. It was with this experience that the apostle Paul said, "I continue eagerly to lay hold of it."
"Therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded” says Paul. This thinking is the sign that we are perfect ones. Spiritual experiences can be different for everyone. But all those who are interested are the perfect ones. We are called to live as spiritual Christians and not just worship Christians.
Therefore, let us continue our spiritual race toward the goal of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
