"இவ்விதமாய் அவர்கள் வழிநடந்துபோகையில், தண்ணீருள்ள ஓரிடத்திற்கு வந்தார்கள். அப்பொழுது மந்திரி: இதோ, தண்ணீர் இருக்கிறதே, நான் ஞானஸ்நானம் பெறுகிறதற்குத் தடையென்ன என்றார்." ( அப்போஸ்தலருடைய நடபடிகள் 8 : 36 )

(இந்தத் தியானத்தில் ஞானஸ்நானம் குறித்து பல்வேறு கிறிஸ்தவ சபைகளுக்குள் உள்ள முரண்பாடான கருத்துக்களை நான் விளக்க விரும்பவில்லை; விமரிசிக்கவில்லை. மாறாக ஞானஸ்நானத்தின் முக்கியத்துவதையே குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளேன்)  

நாம் கிறிஸ்துவின் இரத்தத்தால் கழுவப்பட்டு மீட்பு அனுபவம் பெற்றபின் அதனை உறுதிப்படுத்த வேண்டுமென்று வேதம் நமக்கு அறிவுறுத்துகின்றது. இன்றைய வசனத்தின் பின்னணியைப் பார்த்தால் இது புரியும். எத்தியோப்பிய மந்திரிக்கு பிலிப்பு சுவிசேஷம் அறிவித்தபோது அவர் கிறிஸ்துவை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டார். உடன்தானே அவருக்குள் ஞானஸ்நானம் பெறவேண்டுமெனும் ஆர்வம் தானாகவே ஏற்படுகின்றது. அப்போது அவர், "இதோ, தண்ணீர் இருக்கிறதே, நான் ஞானஸ்நானம் பெறுகிறதற்குத் தடையென்ன?" என்று பிலிப்புவிடம் கேட்கின்றார். 

"அதற்குப் பிலிப்பு: நீர் முழு இருதயத்தோடும் விசுவாசித்தால் தடையில்லையென்றார். அப்பொழுது அவர்: இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவைத் தேவனுடைய குமாரனென்று விசுவாசிக்கிறேன் என்று சொல்லி; இரதத்தை நிறுத்தச்சொன்னார். அப்பொழுது பிலிப்பும் மந்திரியும் ஆகிய இருவரும் தண்ணீரில் இறங்கினார்கள், பிலிப்பு அவருக்கு ஞானஸ்நானங் கொடுத்தார்." ( அப்போஸ்தலருடைய நடபடிகள் 8 : 37, 38 )

ஞானஸ்நானம் என்பது வெறுமனே நம்மைத் தண்ணீரால் கழுவுவதல்ல; மாறாக அது தேவனோடு நாம் செய்யும் ஒரு உடன்படிக்கை (Agreement). அப்போஸ்தலரான பேதுரு ஞானன்ஸ்நானத்தைப் பற்றிக் கூறும்போது, " ஞானஸ்நானமானது, மாம்ச அழுக்கை நீக்குதலாயிராமல், தேவனைப்பற்றும் நல்மனச்சாட்சியின் உடன்படிக்கையாயிருந்து, இப்பொழுது நம்மையும் இயேசுகிறிஸ்துவினுடைய உயிர்த்தெழுதலினால் இரட்சிக்கிறது;" ( 1 பேதுரு 3 : 21 ) என்று கூறுகின்றார். 

இரண்டாவதாக, ஞானஸ்நானம் தேவன் விரும்பும் நீதியை நிறைவேற்றுவதாகும். தேவன் அவர் விரும்புகின்றபடி நாம் எல்லா அடிப்படை நீதியையும் நிறைவேற்றி வாழவேண்டுமென்று விரும்புகின்றார். இயேசு கிறிஸ்து பாவம் செய்யவில்லை; அவர் ஞானஸ்நானம் பெற அவசியமும் இல்லை.  ஆனாலும் அவர் ஞானஸ்நானம் பெற்றுக்கொண்டார். அவரைத் தடைசெய்த யோவான் ஸ்நானனிடம் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து,  "இப்பொழுது இடங்கொடு, இப்படி எல்லா நீதியையும் நிறைவேற்றுவது நமக்கு ஏற்றதாயிருக்கிறது என்றார்." ( மத்தேயு 3 : 15 ) என்று கூறுவதைப் பார்க்கின்றோம்.  

மூன்றாவதாக நாம் பாவத்துக்கு மரித்து கிறிஸ்துவோடுகூட அடக்கம் செய்யப்படுவதற்கும் புதிய மனிதனாக மறுபடி மரித்தோரிலிருந்து எழும்புவதற்கும் ஞானஸ்நானம் அடையாளமாயிருக்கின்றது.  "ஞானஸ்நானத்திலே அவரோடேகூட அடக்கம் பண்ணப்பட்டவர்களாகவும், அதிலே அவரை மரித்தோரிலிருந்தெழுப்பின தேவனுடைய செயலின் மேலுள்ள விசுவாசத்தினாலே அவரோடகூட எழுந்தவர்களாகவும் இருக்கிறீர்கள்." ( கொலோசெயர் 2 : 12 ) என்கின்றார் பவுல் அப்போஸ்தலர். 

நான்காவதாக, ஞானஸ்நானம் பெறுவதன்மூலம் கிறிஸ்துவை நாம் அணிந்துகொள்கின்றோம். நாம் சரீரத்தில் ஆடை அணிவதுபோல ஞானஸ்நானம் ஆவிக்குரிய ஆடையாக இருக்கின்றது. "ஏனெனில், உங்களில் கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள்ளாக ஞானஸ்நானம் பெற்றவர்கள் எத்தனைபேரோ, அத்தனைபேரும் கிறிஸ்துவைத் தரித்துக்கொண்டீர்களே." ( கலாத்தியர் 3 : 27 ) என்கின்றார் பவுல். 

எனவே தான் கிறிஸ்தவத்தில் ஞானஸ்நானம் நாம் நிறைவேற்றவேண்டிய முக்கியமான கடமைகளில் ஒன்றாக இருக்கின்றது.  அதன்மூலம் நாம் கிறிஸ்துவில் நமது விசுவாசத்தை அறிக்கையிடுகின்றோம், தேவனோடு ஒப்பந்தம் செய்துகொள்கின்றோம், தேவ நீதியினை நிறைவேற்றுகின்றோம், கிறிஸ்துவோடு நமது பாவத்துக்கு மரித்து அவரோடுகூட புதிய மனிதனாக எழுந்திருக்கின்றோம், கிறிஸ்துவை ஆடையாகத் தரித்துக்கொள்கின்றோம்.

"And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?" (Acts 8: 36)

(In this meditation I do not intend to explain, nor criticize, the conflicting opinions within the various Christian congregations about baptism. Rather, I am emphasizing the importance of baptism.)

Scripture instructs us to confirm our faith after we have been washed by the blood of Christ and experienced redemption. This will be understood if we look at the background of today's verse. When Philip evangelized the Ethiopian minister, he accepted Christ. At the same time, the desire to be baptized automatically arises in him. Then he said, "Behold, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?".

"And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him." (Acts 8: 37, 38)

Baptism is not simply washing us with water; Rather it is an agreement we make with God. When the apostle Peter says about baptism, "even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:" ( 1 Peter 3 : 21)

Second, baptism is the fulfillment of God's willed righteousness. God wants us to fulfill all basic righteousness and live according to His will. Jesus Christ did not sin; He did not need to be baptized. But he was baptized. Jesus Christ said to John the Baptist who forbade him, "Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him." (Matthew 3: 15)

Thirdly, baptism symbolizes our dying to sin and being buried with Christ and rising from the dead again as a new man. "Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead." ( Colossians 2 : 12 )

Fourthly, by baptism we put on Christ. Baptism is a spiritual garment as we clothe the body. "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” (Galatians 3: 27) says Paul.

That is why baptism is one of the most important duties we must fulfill in Christianity. Through it we declare our faith in Christ, make a contract with God, fulfill God's justice, die with Christ to our sins and rise with Him as a new man, and put on Christ as a garment.
