"nor are they all
children because they are Abraham’s descendants, but: 'THROUGH ISAAC YOUR
DESCENDANTS SHALL BE NAMED.'" — Romans 9:7 (NASB)
Patriarch Abraham was a man of
God who walked with Him, grew strong in faith, and received divine blessings.
Therefore, the people of Israel took pride in calling themselves descendants of
Abraham. However, the Apostle Paul explains to them that simply boasting about
this without living a life acceptable to God is meaningless.
In today's meditation, the
Apostle Paul explains a vital scriptural truth using Abraham’s sons, Ishmael
and Isaac.
Although God promised Abraham
a son, a child was not born immediately according to God’s promise. Therefore,
Abraham’s wife Sarah gave her handmaid Hagar to him as a wife, thinking that a
child might be born through her. Abraham agreed to this. When Ishmael was born
to Abraham through Hagar, Abraham was 86 years old (Genesis 16:16). Thus,
Ishmael was not a son born according to God's will, but rather according to
human desire.
Later, when Abraham was nearly
100 years old, Isaac—the promised son—was born. That is, Ishmael, born first,
came by human desire; Isaac, born later, came according to God’s promise.
Indeed:
"That is, it is not the
children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise
are regarded as descendants." — Romans 9:8 (NASB)
Children were born to Ishmael,
and children were born to Isaac. All of them were descendants of Abraham.
However, even though they were descendants of Abraham, not all of them were
considered children of Abraham in God’s sight. The reason is that God’s will
was for Abraham’s true offspring to come through Isaac.
The Apostle Paul highlights
this exact point in today's key verse. He states that children born according
to the flesh are not God's children. Likewise, simply being born to Christian
parents does not make us belong to Christ. First, we must become heirs to the
promises of Christ. That is, we must receive the experience of redemption
washed by His blood. He explains that only those who become children according
to the promise sealed by Christ's blood are counted as the offspring of Christ.
This deep theological truth
becomes fully clear to us when we experience spiritual rebirth. We must strive
to receive that experience. If we live merely as Sunday-worship Christians, we
remain children born according to the flesh like Ishmael; even if we call
ourselves Christians, we are not true Christians in the eyes of Christ. Only
those who inherit the promises of Christ are true Christians. To receive such
an inherited life, all we need to do is surrender ourselves to Christ so that
our sins may be forgiven.
