🍒 The Cost of True Discipleship - Luke 14:25–33

Faithfulness Beyond Human Presence (Philippians 2:12)

“Obedient as you have always been, not only when I am present but all the more now when I am absent.”

Today's first reading from the Philippians Paul says "True obedience does not depend on someone's presence, supervision or approval. It flows from a heart deeply rooted in God. St. Paul reminds us that spiritual maturity is revealed when we remain faithful even when no one is watching or guiding us. Our faithfulness must not depend on who is beside us, but on how deeply God lives within us. True discipleship is living God's will out of love, not merely out of obligation.

The Cost of True Discipleship (Luke 14:25–33)

“Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.”

Jesus presents three essential demands of discipleship. He is looking for people who are willing to surrender their whole lives to Him.

First, to love Jesus above every other love. When Jesus speaks of hating our family and even our own lives, He is not asking us to reject our loved ones. He teaches us that no relationship, human expectation or personal desire should take God's place. Christ must be our first love, and every other love must find its proper place in Him.

Second, to carry our own cross. The cross means remaining faithful to God's will even when it demands sacrifice. It means forgiving when wounded, loving without recognition and choosing obedience over personal comfort. We cannot seek the glory of the resurrection while refusing the way of the cross. Through dying to our pride and selfishness, Christ's life grows within us.

Third, to renounce all our possessions. This means more than giving up material things. It also means letting go of our attachment to power, position, reputation, security, personal opinions and our own ways of doing things. True renunciation is not simply possessing less, but allowing nothing to possess our hearts more than God.

These three demands reveal the heart of discipleship: surrendering our attachments, embracing the cross and releasing everything that prevents us from belonging completely to Christ. They challenge not only what we possess, but also what possesses us.

Perhaps the deepest question of today's Gospel is not How much have I given up for Jesus? but What am I still unwilling to surrender to Him? We may follow Jesus while secretly holding on to our own will. True discipleship begins when we stop placing conditions on our surrender. It is a daily journey of allowing Christ to transform our loves, our choices and our attachments until our whole life becomes His. Amen
